EPS is the professional journal of the ECPR devoted to publishing contributions by and for the political science community. Its interpretation of ‘political science’ is wide and encompasses comparative politics, political economy, international relations, public administration, political theory, European studies and related disciplines. It publishes pieces on how the discipline is, can and ought to be.
Articles address research matters (including debates in the discipline, research projects, political science information sources, funding opportunities); professional matters (such as career structures and prospects, external evaluation, higher education reforms, accreditation issues); doctoral training provision and teaching matters; and relations between academia and politicians, policy makers, journalists and ordinary citizens. EPS also includes more substantive pieces that provide a political science perspective on important current events. In addition to original articles, the journal carries shorter notes, review articles and symposia, progress reports on lively areas of research and profiles of people in the profession.

Jonathon Moses, Norwegian University of Science and Technology
Ekaterina Rashkova, University of Innsbruck
Daniel Stockemer, University of Ottawa
Lasse Thomassen, Queen Mary University of London
About the role
Lasse Thomassen completes his term of office at the end of 2016, so the ECPR is seeking a replacement who will work alongside the rest of the editorial team with specific responsibility for book reviews. Under Dr Thomassen’s editorship, innovations such as ‘review symposiums’ and ‘review exchanges’ have added extra value to the traditional book review, growing readership and citations of these important pieces. The successful candidate will continue work in this area which requires an energetic and proactive approach to commissioning reviews and then copyediting manuscripts ready for publication.
As well as their work on the reviews, the editor will work as full member of the editorial team, contributing towards the wider mission of the journal, which includes:
- Determine the composition of the editorial board;
- Produce the annual report delivered by the editors at the end of the calendar year;
- Represent the journal at major political science conferences;
- Attend the annual Publications Retreat at the ECPR’s offices, to meet with the Publications Board, publisher and other ECPR editors;
- Take a leading role in scholarly debate about challenges and new opportunities facing political science and academic publishing; and
- Contribute to/lead innovations designed to increase the reach and impact of the journal.
Person specification
The ECPR is seeking an enthusiastic political scientist with a wide range of contacts in Europe and the rest of the world, looking for an opportunity to develop their career whilst contributing to an important journal of the profession. Candidates would ideally have some experience of the publishing industry, either as an editor or author, and a high proficiency in written English if it is not their first language.
Applications are welcomed from all sections of the political science community. Preference will be given to applicants from an ECPR member or Associate Member, or an institution which is committed to joining the ECPR at least for the duration of the Editorship. The ECPR welcomes diversity and encourages people irrespective of their race, gender, marital status, age, disability, religion or belief, or sexual orientation. The successful applicant will receive an annual editorial fee and a fund to cover travel expenses incurred in attending meetings related to the journal.
