Sandra Lavenex is Professor of European and International Politics at Department of Political Science and International Relations at the University of Geneva, member of the Global Studies Institute at the same University and Visiting Professor at the Collège d'Europe, Natolin Campus. She obtained her PhD in 1999 from the European University Institute in Florence for a thesis entitled "The Europeanisation of Refugee Policies: Between Human Rights and Internal Security". She has pioneered the study of European asylum and immigration policies both in their internal and external, international dimensions. The Future of Europe: Challenges, Visions, Scenarios

This roundtable discusses the challenges that beset the European Union today and the likely scenarios that open up before it. Scenarios depend, of course, on the visions that various actors – both within and without the EU – have of the Union. While it is important to study the inner dynamics and the development of the Union from a ‘domestic politics’ point of view, it is equally important to chart its changing place in the global context. For this reason, this roundtable aims to discuss the likely development of the Union in the next decades, taking into serious considerations not only the dreams (or nightmares!) of Europeans but also the expectations that the rest of the world has on the Union.
