Abstract

From the local to the global level, women’s leadership and political participation are restricted. Women are underrepresented in leading positions and face several obstacles to participating in political life. Structural barriers through discriminatory laws and institutions still limit women’s options to run for office. Moreover, women’s leadership is increasingly contested and we see a rise in political violence against women in politics. The panel includes papers engaging with questions of political representation, how and why women’s leadership is contested and the effects of this contestation and increased violence on (women in) politics.
