Abstract

Place is related to citizens’ vision for democratic societies, accepted citizen norms and identities, and citizen practices. Citizens in rural communities, for instance, are exposed to and have access to different citizen practices than urban citizens which can impact on their political identities (Panelli et al., 2007). Moving between places through processes such as immigration and emigration can also shape citizens’ identities. In addition to citizens themselves, political institutions, events, and actors can also act as identity formation agents within the context of place. The papers in this panel explore this intersection between place and political identity formation by asking: How does place shape political identity and loyalty? How does place shape the identity formation processes of migrants? Can transnational political institutions act as citizen-building institutions? The research shared in this panel draws on international case studies to address these questions.
