Abstract

Citizenship identity model (Bondarevskaya, 2016; 2022) will be used as a theoretical framework for further empirical research. Meaning content of citizenship identity constitutes values and democracy related attitudes. Solidarity is considered as a type of citizenship behavior. While values lie at the center (the most stable component), democracy related attitudes (more apt to changes) lie in the layer next to the center. The third layer, citizenship activity, is even more apt to changes than attitudes. The outer layer, behavior in particular situation, is the most apt for changes. Schwartz theory of basic values (2012) was taken as a basis for analyzing values of Self-Determination, Simulation, Hedonism, Achievement, Power, Security, Conformity, Tradition, Benevolence and Universalism as predictors of democracy related attitudes (Krzywosz-Rynkiewicz, 2022) and solidarity (Gonzales & Lay, 2021). Connections between particular values and democracy related attitudes will be determined empirically showing which values are to be considered as citizenship related. Similarly, connections between particular values and solidarity behavior will be determined. Among other predictors of democracy related attitudes and solidarity behavior are contacts with externally displaced Ukrainians, based on contact theory (Visintin et al. 2019), religiosity (Huber & Huber, 2012), national identity (Postmes et al. 2013; Leach et al. 2008) and institutional trust. Empirical data will be collected in Alfred Nobel University and Dnipro National University in Dnipro, city controlled by Ukrainian government, in the beginning of 2024. Sample will constitute around 600 students of Psychology, Law and Economics study at these universities. Empirical results are to be implicated in Ukrainian system of education in Social Psychology curricular and in citizenship education / democracy education. At present there are two documents which are in force to regulate citizenship education with relevant contradictions between them. On 16th June 2015 the “Concept of national patriotic upbringing” was signed by Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine. The current “Concept of development of citizenship education in Ukraine” was adopted by Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine on 3rd October 2018. War in Ukraine which started on 24th February 2021 and is still ongoing has effected perception of democracy both among Ukrainians who stayed in Ukraine during the war and Ukrainians who live outside Ukraine under temporary protection of EU countries or other legal mechanisms around the world. All of them have acquired different life experience which determined changes in values and attitudes. New concepts of citizenship education in Ukraine encounter a challenge to address all Ukrainians. That requires studies conducted both in Ukraine and outside of Ukraine revealing values and attitudes of Ukrainians. It is obvious that citizenship education models which are successfully implemented in other countries cannot be just transferred to Ukraine but will require much adaptations. The proposed above research design is one of many possible to grasp values and democracy related attitudes for further implementation in education.
