Abstract

Ashlee Christoffersen (she/her) is a Banting Postdoctoral Researcher at York University (Canada) and Honorary Fellow at the University of Edinburgh, UK. Her research is about the operationalization of the Black feminist theory of intersectionality in policy and practice: its influence and possibilities, as well as the discursive and material resistance it faces. She also has a particular interest in intersectional research methodology. Her publications include ‘The politics of intersectional practice: Competing concepts of intersectionality’, Policy & Politics (2021); with Akwugo Emejulu, ‘“Diversity Within”: The Problems with “Intersectional” White Feminism in Practice’, Social Politics: International Studies in Gender, State & Society (2022); ‘Is intersectional racial justice organising possible? Confronting generic intersectionality’, Ethnic and Racial Studies (2022); Advancing Racial Equality in Higher Education (co-edited with Aerin Lai and Nasar Meer), 2023; and ‘The whiteness of ‘sex discrimination’: Theorising white feminist ideology in politics’, European Journal of Politics and Gender (forthcoming). Prior to re-entering academia, Ashlee worked in the trade union movement and NGOs, and remains involved in grassroots activism.
