ECPR at APSA and the ‘big question’ of migration

The ECPR will hold its regular panel slot at the APSA Annual Meeting in Philadelphia on Saturday 3 September (08:00 – 09:30), on the subject ‘Migration and the Migration Crisis Today: Policies, Experiences, Impact’

Chaired by ECPR Director, Martin Bull, the panel is focused on the ‘big question’ of migration and its transformative potential. Migration has exploded as a political, economic and social crisis in Europe in the recent past as well as figuring prominently in North American debates. It is an issue on which politicians and parties struggle to agree on the analysis or find adequate responses to the problem, even when the issue takes on the dimensions of a humanitarian crisis. The panel brings together specialists working on different aspects of migration to analyse migration trends and migration systems in different countries and regions, thus helping us to understand one of the most formidable challenges facing governments and societies today.

Papers to be presented are:

The Evolving European, Eurasian, and North American Regional Migration Systems – Andrei Korobkov, Middle Tennessee State University

Restrictive Rights and Categorisation in European Migration Policy – Julia Mourão Permoser, University of Vienna

The Contribution of Migrants to the Expansive Dynamics of Capitalist Systems – David Kaufmann, University of Bern; Markus Hinterleitner, University of Bern; Eva Thomann, Heidelberg University

‘I was One of Them Once’: Migrants, their Descendants and the Migrant Crisis – Constanza Vera-Larrucea, Stockholm University

Migrant Works vs Brides: The Care Crisis in Southern Europe and East Asia – Tiziana Caponio, University of Turn and Collegio Carlo Alberto; Margarita Estevez-Abe, Syracuse University
