Matt Qvortrup joins EPSR editorial team

Matt Qvortrup, Chair of Applied Political Science at Coventry University, has been appointed co-editor of European Political Science Review. Matt's term starts on 1 January, and he takes over from Wil Hout, joining Carlos Closa on the journal's editorial team.

An expert on comparative European politics and referendums, Matt's latest book Angela Merkel: Europe's Most Influential Leader (Overlook Press) has earned glowing reviews in Kirkus, Booklist and Publishers Weekly. His other publications include Referendums and Ethnic Conflict (2014) and A Comparative Study of Referendums (2005).

Awarded the PSA Prize in 2013 for his research on 'Terrorism and Political Science’, he was a Specialist Advisor to the House of Commons Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee, and a member of President Obama’s Special Envoy Team in Africa, 2009–2010.

Before his academic career, Matt headed up the British Home Office's Gun Crime Section from 2002–2004, and prior to that he was Special Advisor to the Home Secretary.

Matt gained his doctorate in Politics at Brasenose College, Oxford in 2000. Also a qualified lawyer, he holds a Diploma from the College of Law, London.

A frequent commentator for the BBC, Matt also writes regularly for Bloomberg. In addition to his obsessive interest in politics, he is an avid reader of Belgian comic books, a devotee of the rock band The Doors, and a film buff.

Following his appointment to EPSR, Matt Qvortrup told us, 'I am immensely honoured – and a wee bit humbled – to take up the post at European Political Science Review. A strong journal based on facts, empirical evidence and theoretical rigour is needed at a time when many people talk about the "post-truth society". I am sure EPSR will play an increasingly important role in years to come.'
