New softback from prize-winner Christian Rauh

Christian Rauh, from WZB Berlin, has just had his first monograph, A Responsive Technocracy?, released in softback by ECPR Press.

The book, which is based on his thesis Politicisation, issue salience, and consumer policies of the European Commission: Does public awareness and contestation of supranational matters increase the responsiveness of Europe’s central agenda-setter? in 2013 won the prestigious Jean Blondel PhD Prize for the best thesis in politics at an ECPR Press member institution. Rauh's thesis was hailed as an outstanding new work that addresses crucial themes in political science and political thought.

Working closely together, Christian and the Press have developed the thesis into a much-needed and topical study of the EU’s relationship with consumers, which examines how the Commission’s policies changed over the course of a decade. Blending public opinion, discourse and public policy analyses, and using evidence from multiple sources including surveys, media analysis, elite interviews, and process tracing, Rauh shows that public awareness and contestation do indeed have the power to change the substance of European law.
