Travelling to Bamberg by air

You can travel into Bamberg via four different airports, details for each are below.

Nuremberg International Airport

The nearest and most convenient airport for the Winter School is Nuremberg International Airport (NUE) (distance from Bamberg: 70km). Nuremberg airport is served by a number of carriers including Airberlin, Air France/KLM (Cityjet), Germanwings, Lufthansa, Ryanair, Turkish Airlines and Vueling (cheap flights can be found at Swoodoo, Opodo.de or Germanwings).

Participants can travel from the airport to Nuremberg Central Station (Nürnberg Hauptbahnhof) by regular underground/subway services (take line U2). There are approximately four underground trains per hour; the journey takes around 12 minutes and the fare is currently €2.10. From Nuremberg Central Station, there are regular trains to Bamberg; during the day there are at least two trains every hour. Train journeys vary by type of train from 37 to 56 minutes. The fare for the slower trains (45-56 minutes) is currently €10.10. For train connections, please see the German Railways website. For more information about booking train tickets online please see below.

Frankfurt International Airport

An alternative for international arrivals is Frankfurt International Airport (FRA) (distance from Bamberg: 230km). Frankfurt Airport is directly connected to the high speed German Railway System. From Frankfurt Airport you can take the ICE [InterCity Express line (ICE)] to Würzburg, which runs every 30 minutes, where you can then pick up a train to Bamberg. There are several regional trains to Bamberg every hour from Würzburg. The total train journey time to Bamberg from Frankfurt Airport takes around three hours; a ticket costs around €58, depending on when you book your ticket.

Frankfurt Hahn Airport

Please be aware that although it is named after the city Frankfurt, the airport Frankfurt-Hahn (HHN) is relatively inaccessible and would require an additional five-hour-trip by bus and train from there to Bamberg. However, sometimes there are very cheap Ryanair flights to Frankfurt Hahn. If you arrive at Frankfurt Hahn, you have to take the BOHR bus to either Mainz Central Station (ticket currently €13.50) or Frankfurt Central Station (ticket currently €14). At the airport bus stop, look out for a BOHR sign, the name of the bus company. Tickets are available at the counter in front of terminal B or from the bus driver. The trip to Mainz takes about one hour, while to Frankfurt takes about two hours. For the onward trip to Bamberg, it is easiest to take the train. From Mainz, you will need to change trains twice in Aschaffenburg and Würzburg (duration around three hours). Taking the train from Frankfurt to Bamberg, you will need to change once in Würzburg (duration around two and a half hours). Prices vary from €30 and €54. For more information on the bus connections to Mainz and Frankfurt check out the Frankfurt Hahn airport website.

Munich Airport

Getting to Bamberg from Munich Airport takes about three to four hours, depending on your connection. From Munich Airport there are regular subway lines (line S1) to Munich Central Station (München Hauptbahnhof). From there you can take the ICE with a direct connection to Bamberg, which runs twice every two hours. Ticket prices vary between €39 and €68, depending on how early you book.

Travelling to Bamberg by train

Bamberg is connected to the InterCity Express line (ICE) Munich – Nuremberg – Leipzig/Halle – Berlin/Hamburg, which stops in Bamberg every hour. Bamberg is also connected to Würzburg and Nuremberg by regional trains, with several connections per hour (travelling time between 32 and 57 minutes). For more information on your specific connection, ticket prices and online booking, please view the German Railways (Deutsche Bahn) website.

At the top of the webpage you should select your home country before booking tickets online. Deutsche Bahn offer fare savings (Sparpreis). On intercity connections the Deutsche Bahn offer a limited number of reduced tickets. These tickets are available three months before a trip and are sold on a first come, first served basis. Therefore it makes sense to book train tickets as early as possible to save travel costs.

Special ticket options of Deutsche Bahn:

On this day, it allows you to travel between 0900 on the chosen day until 0300 on the following day. On weekends, the timing is slightly more generous: nn Saturdays and Sundays, you can use the Bavaria-Ticket from midnight of the chosen day until 0300 on the following day (e.g. from Friday night at midnight until Sunday morning 0300).

The Bavaria-Ticket is valid on all local trains for all rail companies and all transport association services (S-Bahn, subway, trams and buses) in Bavaria. However, please be aware that it is not valid on high speed trains such as the ICE, IC or EC. You can purchase a ticket at any Deutsche Bahn vending machine at the station or at the Deutsche Bahn Service Centre at the station. Please be aware that if you purchase the ticket in the Service Centre you are charged with an additional service fee.

Getting around Bamberg

In Bamberg, many trips can be made by foot in less than 30 minutes. However, there is also a well-developed public transport system with a number of buses serving the campus. Buses run from the city centre (Central Bus station: ZOB) to Feldkirchenstraße at least every 10 minutes during daytime. You can take buses with numbers 914 (direction Gundelsheim Rathaus) or 907 (direction Drosendorf/Memmelsdorf) and exit at the stop Feldkirchenstrasse; or buses no. 931 (direction P+R Kronacher Str.) and 901 (direction Bamberg Gartenstadt) and exit the bus at Kloster-Banz-Straße.  After 1900 the frequency is reduced, but there are still connections. A single fare currently costs €1.70 (2014). The bus tickets are available at vending machines at the central station and the central bus station or from the bus driver.

From 2015 the best option for WSMT participants will be to buy a so-called 7-day-MobiCard for the inner area of Bamberg (Zone 1100). It will be available from vending machines, where you can flexibly determine the seven days, e.g. Sunday to next Saturday, or Friday to next Thursday. The MobiCard will cost €13.00 for seven days. Vending machines are located at the central train station (outside at the bus stops) and at the central bus station.

The route map of the local transport company is available here.

More information on the local public transport system can be found here.
