Abstract

The objective of the paper is to evaluate the user-statistics of the answered questionnaires, generated by the online-tool for the Hungarian parliamentary election in April 2018. Furthermore, it analyses the “Vokskabin effects” on the political knowledge with focus on procurement, analysis and evaluation (Carmines/Huckfeldt 1996) and on electoral participation. International VAA studies have shown that VAA users are more motivated to turnout that non-users and the usage of VAAs has positive impact on political knowledge as well (Garzia/De Angelis/Pianzola 2014). These trends support the expectation of similar effects of the Hungarian VAA 2018 on knowledge and participation. The paper raises two main questions: 1. Are there any regional differences of Vokskabin users’ behavior? 2. How does Vokskabin influence the voting behavior with focus on the electoral participation and the political knowledge? The study relies on an opt-in survey administered to users after having completed the questionnaire. Due the fact that these kinds of self-assessment surveys do not ensure objective data (Ibid.) the paper only aims to emphasize possible trends and to discuss solutions for eliminating self-selection biases. In addition to the analysis of the statistics the paper aims to highlight the role of voting advice applications in general and the role of Vokskabin in particular, as means of civic education in the 21st century Hungarian society.
