Instructor Bio

Benoît Rihoux is a full professor of political science, whose research interests include political parties, new social movements, organisational studies, political change, and policy processes.

He is manager of the COMPASSS international research group on comparative methods, in the development and refinement of which he plays a leading role, bringing together scholars from Europe, North America and Japan in particular.

Benoît is a convenor of international methods initiatives more generally, and has published Innovative Comparative Methods for Policy Analysis: Beyond the Quantitative-Qualitative Divide (Springer/Kluwer, ed. with Heike Grimm 2006) and Configurational Comparative Methods: Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) and Related Techniques (Sage, ed. with Charles Ragin 2009).

He has published extensively on systematic comparative methods (QCA in particular) and their applications in diverse fields – especially policy- and management-related – with interdisciplinary teams.

Benoît is assisted by Ioana-Elena (Nena) Oana, a final stage PhD Researcher in Comparative Politics at Central European University, where she is working on policy responsiveness to collective mobilisation.

Nena is the main developer of the R package SetMethods used for Set-Theoretic Multi-Method Research and Advanced QCA. She has extensive experience in teaching applied QCA using R.

Besides research methodology, Nena's main research interests also include political participation and representation, political behaviour, and political psychology. She has been involved in collaborative EU-funded projects and is also qualified in larger-N designs and diverse quantitative methods.

Short Outline

This Workshop is tailored for scholars with significant research experience beyond their PhD, and organised on a flexible basis to meet specific needs.

It covers a broad range of case-oriented methods and designs (single case studies, process tracing, ‘thick’ binary comparisons, etc…), comparative methods and designs (small-N comparisons, intermediate-N comparison across multiple cases, Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) and neighbouring methods, typology-building, etc.), and ‘mixed’/multi-methods designs combining qualitative, comparative and/or quantitative methods.

Long Course Outline

If you are an experienced scholar with significant research experience beyond your PhD, and/or if you occupy a senior academic role, this Workshop is for you.

Typical research methods needs / challenges you might face include:

  • writing up the methods section of a research project
  • choosing the appropriate method(s) for a funded project
  • arbitrating between methodological options
  • updating your knowledge of recent evolutions in methods applicable to your field
  • troubleshooting your own methods use
  • learning which methods experts to contact for what
  • getting advice on methods training for your team members
  • receiving feedback on a syllabus you are putting together
  • getting advice on methodological topics in existing syllabi
  • writing up methods sections of publications (articles, books, reports, etc)

We recognise that time is scarce for seasoned scholars like you. This Workshop offers you a time-efficient formula to get tailored advice from an expert team.

This is a fully interactive Workshop. However, if you wish, training updates can be organised à la carte, and training resources provided.

Phase 1: Input

Until 15 December, prospective participants email Benoît with the core methodological questions / problems / arbitrations they currently face. Benoît and Nena then correspond with participants to adapt the Workshop to best suit participants’ needs.

Phase 2: Three-day Workshop, 21 – 23 February

Each day’s schedule is organised around participants’ needs. It involves non-limitative list group discussions / Q&A sessions around each participant’s personal projects, as well as discussions on overarching methodological issues.

Ample time is also provided for one-to-one meetings with Benoît and Nena.

This Workshop takes place in parallel with Tamás Rudas's Quantitative Seasoned Scholar Workshop. If participants wish, we will convene a common session involving Tamás, Benoît, and their assistants, along with participants from both Workshops.

You can book at least one appointment with Tamás, and you’ll have the chance to talk informally with other methods experts over dinner on the final day.

  • A social event with the Workshop participants

Phase 3: Additional guidance, March – June

Benoît and Nena remain available for up to four Skype appointments per participant. You are also welcome to email them for further guidance.
