About

Legislative Studies is an important and growing subfield of Political Science. The Standing Group on Parliaments' aim is to promote comparative research and theory-building on the institutionalisation, capacity, operation, and performance of legislatures, embracing theoretical, empirical, and methodological diversity. It also promotes the dissemination of such research through conferences, workshops, summer schools and publications. Core interests of the Group’s members are:

  • the institutionalisation and structures of parliaments, such as organisational patterns, rules and procedures, committee systems;
  • dynamics of representation, such as the extent of descriptive and substantive representation in parliamentary work, links to wider publics and communities, or constituency work of legislators;
  • executive-legislative relations and issues relating to oversight and accountability;
  • the contribution of and processes within parliaments relating to law- and policy-making;
  • and, roles and behaviours of particular parliamentary actors, including parliamentary party groups, individual legislators, stakeholders and lobbyists

The Standing Group’s overall aim is to promote comparative research and theory-building on the institutionalisation, capacity, operation, and performance of legislatures and the dissemination of such research. The Standing Group is both the starting point for those interested in studying legislatures and the meeting point for existing scholars in the field. The Standing Group on Parliaments brings together scholars dedicated to the study of legislatures, including but not limited to parliaments and congresses, across the world.

The Standing Group aims to:

  1. Contribute to the development of the comparative study of legislatures, including but not limited to parliaments and congresses, across the world;
  2. Establish, develop and maintain an international network of researchers in the field of legislative studies;
  3. Work with other organizations dedicated to the scholarly study of legislatures;
  4. Organise regular events for the international legislative studies community such as conference panels and workshops, as well as a biannual summer school and biannual conference, helping develop links between experienced academics and junior scholars;
  5. Articulate its members’ views vis-à-vis ECPR central bodies and the wider academic community.

The activities of the standing group include its biennial conference on legislative studies, the summer school on parliaments, organisation of workshops and sections at the ECPR Joint Sessions and ECPR General conference, and other events and activities that foster scholarly exchange in the field of legislative studies.
