The research programme of the Department of Political and Social Sciences (SPS) places emphasis on political and social change within Europe at the national, sub-national and transnational level. The research interests of the Department range across the four sub-disciplines of comparative politics, sociology, international relations, and social and political theory. The Department favours a multi-faceted approach to research projects and theses many of which cut across traditional academic boundaries. Courses in both quantitative and qualitative methods are available as options in the first and second year, while field work and data collection normally take place in the second and third year.

The Institute of Political Science at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg was founded in 1961 under the direction of Waldemar Besson. Today, the Institute covers all sub-disciplines of Political Science, such as Political Theory, International Relations and Comparative Politics. A special Erlangen feature is the strong focus on Area Studies (Middle East and Asia) and Human Rights/Human Rights Politics.
