Coming soon: the ECPR blog

In summer 2020, ECPR is launching a political science blog.

Part of our ongoing 50th anniversary celebrations, the blog will be a platform for informal, engaging academic content and debate, bringing together ideas and research from all branches of political science.

The blog also aims to capture the attention of the mainstream media, showcasing the work of ECPR’s thriving scholarly community in a way that’s accessible to a non-academic readership.

Blogposts of 600–1,200-words about politics, policy programmes, societal and political issues will be authored by academics, but will target a broader readership of policy-makers, journalists, businesspeople and the general public.

A below-the-line comments section should generate lively debate, and continue the conversation on social media.

How will it work?

ECPR journalsWe’ll be reaching out to authors of articles in our co-published journals (particularly our new Open Access journal, Political Research Exchange), to produce short, impactful blogposts based on their published pieces. For readers interested in delving deeper, we will link back to the original journal content.

Standing Groups We’ll be inviting our 50+ special-interest Standing Groups and Research Networks to highlight and discuss new and exciting ideas being developed in their fields.

The ECPR community Some 20,000 scholars regularly engage with ECPR; every year around 3,500 take part in our events. Many of these are early career researchers keen to explore alternatives beyond academic journal publishing, perhaps offering a political science perspective on a topical political news story – our blog will provide the perfect platform.

Editorship We are appointing an Academic Editor (application deadline Monday 27 April) to review all submissions and coordinate with editors, Standing Groups and members of our community to develop and shape the content – a call for applications for this exciting new post will go out soon. A Production Editor will manage workflow, source images, and publish content to the platform.

Brand new member benefit

Blog publishing is becoming an important part of an academic career, strengthening a scholar’s profile, and winning them a readership beyond academia.

Making research more accessible and impactful, publishing in blogs can also lead to coverage of your work in national newspapers and magazines, or to appearances in broadcast media.

While our blog will consider submissions from every corner of the global political science community, its editors will prioritise authors working or studying at ECPR member institutions, thus enhancing our attractive package of benefits for ECPR member affiliates.

Over to you!

After much deliberation, we can’t quite settle on a name that truly captures the spirit and purpose of this exciting new venture.

We’re therefore laying down the gauntlet: think up a name* for our blog that reflects the process of bringing people and ideas together, unravelling or translating complex themes, and serving them in an easily digestible form!

If your suggested name is chosen, we'll send you a copy of our soon-to-be-published 50th Anniversary volume, plus some new-brand ECPR merch. You can tweet your ideas to @ecpr – or email membership@ecpr.eu
