Introducing our Methods School Academic Convenors

We are excited to welcome Sebastian Koehler and Susana Salgado as Academic Convenors for our renowned Methods School, who will be overseeing all academic matters for the event.

Sebastian and Susana both have internationally recognised experience in researching, teaching and training in qualitative or quantitative research methods. We very much look forward to working with them to ensure that our Methods School continues to grow, innovate and thrive.

Sebastian Koehler

Sebastian is Lecturer in Political Economy at the Department of Political Economy, King's College London and proud father of a lovely daughter. Research interests

Sebastian's main research interests are in Political Economy and Political Science. He focuses on understanding the role of institutions and their impact on strategic interactions in politics, in particular regarding lobbying, legislative politics, as well as bargaining and political decision-making. He emphasises a strong connection between formal theory and empirical analysis.

Methodologically, he is interested in network analysis and methods of causal inference.

On his appointment

'I am thrilled to serve as one of the Academic Convenors of the ECPR Methods School. My main goal is to preserve the strength of the School, which is combining excellent foundational methods training to the ECPR community while providing an excellent opportunity for networking with people from very different backgrounds and all over Europe.

At the same time, I strive to make sure the Methods School is leading young researchers into the future by incorporating advanced courses, which reflect the move towards Data Science and Causal Inference in the discipline.'

Susana Salgado

Susana is Principal Research Fellow at the Institute of Social Sciences, University of Lisbon, where she coordinates competitively funded research projects and teaches at the PhD programme in Comparative Politics. She had previously held positions at the New University of Lisbon and at the University of Oxford, as well as visiting positions in Brazil, Italy, and Australia.

Research interests

Susana’s main research interests include political communication, democracy and democratization processes, populism, as well as the impact of different types of media on democratic politics.

Susana’s work has a strong interdisciplinary perspective, and her approaches to these topics have been mainly comparative and mixed methods.

On her appointment

'As a scholar deeply interested in unveiling the complexity of today’s politics and in empirical research, I acknowledge the crucial role of methodological choices and how these affect the knowledge that is created and thus shape our discussions and decisions.

My mission as Academic Convenor means the great opportunity of thinking strategically not only about the future of the ECPR Methods School, but also about the future of research methods in political research, which I see as increasingly applied and plural.'
