We are excited to introduce our Series on Middle Eastern Policy and EU Relations, an initiative launched in response to concerns within the ECPR community in the wake of the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
The series seeks to foster an informed, nuanced understanding of the cultural, economic, and political dynamics of Middle Eastern communities, and their relationships with each other and the world – while providing a platform for balanced and meaningful discourse.
Following an open call for Convenors, we are pleased to announce the appointment of Assem Dandashly of Maastricht University and Christos Kourtelis of Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences.
Serving a one-year term starting 1 October 2024, the Convenors will shape the series by selecting topics, identifying contributors, and ensuring the discussions remain balanced, scholarly, and free from partisan politics.
The new series will harness the full breadth of ECPR’s portfolio, featuring expert contributions across a variety of platforms, including events and publications.
A central feature of the series will be a line-up of webinars that bring together experts in Middle East policies and EU external relations. The discussions will explore the complex dynamics shaping the MENA region, tackling topics from diplomatic strategies to economic partnerships and security challenges.
Assem Dandashly is Associate Professor at the Department of Political Science at Maastricht University. Assem’s research focuses on EU-Middle East and North Africa (MENA) relations. He studies issues related to democratisation, crisis management, state-building, security and development in the MENA.
Christos Kourtelis is Assistant Professor in European Public Policy at the Department of International, European and Area Studies at Panteion University. He has previously lectured on International Relations in the UK, Turkey and the Netherlands. Christos' work focuses on the European Neighbourhood Policy and EU external relations, with research interests in Euro-Mediterranean relations and EU development assistance. His research has been published in international peer-reviewed journals of EU studies and international relations.
