European Political Science seeks new Reviews Editor

We are looking for a Reviews Editor to continue to develop the successful reviews section of our professional journal European Political Science.

This is an excellent opportunity to build on the creative and innovative approach to reviews established by outgoing editor Lasse Thomassen.

About the journal

EPS publishes contributions by, and for, the political science community. Its interpretation of political science is wide and encompasses comparative politics, political economy, international relations, public administration, political theory, European studies and related disciplines. It publishes pieces on how the discipline is, can, and ought to be.

Articles address

  • research matters (including debates in the discipline, research projects, political science information sources, funding opportunities)
  • professional matters (such as career structures and prospects, external evaluation, higher education reforms, accreditation issues)
  • doctoral training provision and teaching matters
  • relations between academia and politicians, policy makers, journalists and ordinary citizens.

EPS also includes more substantive pieces that provide a political science perspective on important current events.

In addition to original articles, the journal carries shorter notes, review articles and symposia, progress reports on lively areas of research and profiles of people in the profession.

Current editorial team

Alasdair Blair De Montfort University
Ekaterina Rashkova University of Innsbruck
Daniel Stockemer University of Ottawa
Lasse Thomassen Queen Mary, University of London

About the role

Lasse Thomassen completes his term of office at the end of 2017, so we are seeking a replacement with specific responsibility for book reviews to work alongside the existing editorial team.

Under Lasse's editorship, innovations such as ‘review symposiums’ and ‘review exchanges’ have added extra value to the traditional book review, growing readership and citations of these important pieces.

The successful applicant will continue work in this area, which requires an energetic and proactive approach to commissioning reviews and then copyediting manuscripts ready for publication.

As well as their work on the reviews, the editor will work as full member of the editorial team, contributing to the wider mission of the journal, responsibilities of which include

  • determining the composition of the editorial board;
  • producing the annual report delivered by the editors at the end of the calendar year;
  • representing the journal at major political science conferences;
  • attending the annual Publications Retreat at ECPR’s offices in Colchester, to meet with the Publications Board, publisher and other ECPR editors;
  • leading the scholarly debate about challenges and new opportunities facing political science and academic publishing; and
  • contributing to innovations designed to increase the reach and impact of the journal.

Person specification

You should be an enthusiastic political scientist with a wide range of contacts in Europe and the rest of the world. Ideally, you should have some experience of the publishing industry, either as an editor or author.

If English is not your first language, you must demonstrate a high proficiency in written English.

Applicants should be employed by an ECPR member or Associate Member institution, or by an institution committed to joining ECPR for at least the duration of the editorship. Check here to see whether your institution is a current member.

The successful applicant will receive an annual editorial fee and a fund to cover travel expenses incurred in attending meetings related to the journal.

The ECPR welcomes diversity and encourages applicants irrespective of race, gender, age, disability, religion or belief, or sexual orientation.
