David Farrell stands down as Speaker of Council

David Farrell, UCDDavid Farrell (University College Dublin) has stood down as Speaker of the ECPR Council after serving in the role for nearly five years.

The ECPR Council is made up of one Official Representative from each Member intuition of the ECPR. It meets annually to discuss new plans with the Executive Committee and to hold it to account for its actions.

David was the first Speaker elected to this position when it was created in 2013, and of his time in the role, he says:

‘It has been an honour to serve as the first Speaker of Council, particularly at a time of great change in the ECPR. I am grateful to the Official Representatives for their constructive engagement in Council meetings, to Central Services for their professional support, and particularly to the Executive Committee members for their steadfast contribution to the running of the organisation.

While it may be true that the ECPR is its members (as represented by the ORs) there is no doubt that the success of the ECPR relies heavily on the huge contributions made by EC members. I saw the role of Speaker as a supportive and facilitative one — a role that I wish my successor every success in continuing.'

David has contributed greatly to the functioning of the Council by shaping the role of the Speaker, by drafting Standing Orders for the Council, and by chairing Council meetings in an even-handed manner, and with great humour. The Executive Committee thanks David for his excellent work.

Elections for a new Speaker will be held following the forthcoming elections of members of the Executive Committee. Meanwhile, and in accordance with the ECPR Constitution, the ECPR Chair Rudy Andeweg will act as Speaker.
