Announcement: Best Paper Award 2023

From the Standing Group on Political Representation.

The Standing Group on Political Representation is delighted to announce the recipients of its first ever Best Paper Award for a paper presented in the section Turbulent Times: Making Representative Democracy Work (Again) at the ECPR General Conference in Prague.

The prize is awarded to Claudia Landwehr and Armin Schäfer from the University of Mainz, Germany for their outstanding paper titled "The Promise of Representative Democracy: Deliberative Responsiveness".

In addition to the winning paper, the jury would like to extend an honorable mention to Carolyn Hendriks and Richard Reid from the Australian National University for their paper titled "Shadow Representation as Deficit Claim Making: Implications for Representative Democracy."

The jury was chaired by Lucy Kinski (University of Salzburg) and comprised Corinna Kroeber, (University of Greifswald), Johannes Pollak (Webster Vienna Private University), and John Erik Fossum (University of Oslo).

Following the nomination by panel chairs and discussants, the jury reviewed the submissions against a set of criteria including originality, contribution to the literature, theoretical and methodological rigor, and implications for future research and society.

The jury commends both papers for their high quality and relevance to representation research.

The winning paper stood out for its well-rounded theoretical argument, offering timely insights into the intersection of deliberative and representative democracy.

We extend our congratulations!
