Travel Information

By air

Pisa International Airport, otherwise known as Galileo Galilei International Airport, is located 1 Km from the centre of Pisa.  Served primarily by low cost airlines Pisa can be reached easily from various Italian cities and numerous European and other international destinations. 

Located at the Pisa Aeroporto exit of the Florence-Pisa-Livorno dual carriageway (SGC FI-PI-LI), and the A12 Genova-Rosignano motorway, the city centre can be reached easily by car.  A number of car hire companies operate from Pisa airport.

The city centre can be reached in just a few minutes by trains that connect the railway terminal of the airport with Pisa Centrale station.

A city bus (LAM Rossa) connects the airport to the Central Station and the centre of Pisa every 10 minutes. The city bus terminus is located just outside the arrivals side of the airport.

The taxi rank is also found at the airport exit - on the arrivals side. The Radio Taxi service (24 h) operates in the city of Pisa, telephone +39 050 541600.

An information point is located by the arrivals gate for those with queries about onward travel.

By rail

Pisa Centrale station is one of the principal regional and national railway junctions.  Frequent trains run to Florence, Rome, Genoa and Lucca from here.

The station is at the southern edge of the city's historical centre, around one and a half kilometres from the airport and two hundred metres from the extra-urban bus terminal at Piazza Sant'Antonio. The taxi rank and the bus stop for urban routes direct to Piazza dei Miracoli, the airport and Cisanello hospital centre can be found outside the railway terminal. The station also provides a luggage storage service.

Please note that when using the rail network, all travel tickets must be stamped, under penalty of sanction, in the designated yellow ticket machines situated next to the ticket office and along the platforms.

By bus

Long distance coaches - Long distance lines operate to connect Pisa to various Italian regions, chiefly central/southern Italy arrives at the Via Pietrasantina terminal).

Direct buses from the airport - Pisa airport can be reached directly from Florence airport and central station. This service is provided by Terravision.

Extra-urban buses - Pisa is serviced by the transport company CPT (Compagnia Pisana Trasporti), which covers most of the province; by Autolinee Lazzi transport company, which connects with Lucca and Viareggio; and by CLAP/Vaibus, which connects with Lucca and Pietrasanta.

By car

From Florence.  Motorway A11 Firenze-Mare, exit at Pisa Nord, take the SS1 Aurelia travelling south to Pisa (approx. 6 km); alternatively Florence-Pisa-Livorno (SGC FI-PI-LI) expressway, exit at Pisa Nord-Est (for the Cisanello hospital centre and the eastern area), Pisa Aeroporto (for the airport and the central-southern area), Pisa Aurelia (for the Leaning Tower and the western area).

From Rome, Bologna.  Motorway A1 to Florence, then Motorway A11, exit at Pisa Nord, then take the SS1 Aurelia travelling south to Pisa (approx. 6 km). Alternatively, follow the motorway A12-E80 from Rome to Civitavecchia, then the SS1-E80 Aurelia to Rosignano Marittimo, then rejoin the A12-E80 to Pisa (exit at Pisa Centro toll-booth).

From Genoa.  Motorway A12 Genova-Rosignano, exit at Pisa Nord, then take the SS1 Aurelia travelling south to Pisa (approx. 6 km).

Please note that most of the historical centre of Pisa falls within the Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL). Only authorised vehicles are permitted access to this zone; the entrances (electronic barriers) are monitored by 24 hour cameras and unauthorised access is sanctioned with a fine.  Visitors staying in a hotel within the ZTL zone can ask their hotel to issue them with a temporary permit. Visitors with restricted mobility and in possession of a disabled sticker may be permitted entry by requesting authorisation in advance from the Polizia Municipale, tel. +39 050 910851/910810.
