The Loop Best Blog Prize

title The Loop

This prize rewards outstanding contributions to ECPR's political science blog, The Loop. It is awarded annually to the best blog article in political science or related fields, and carries a £500 award.

The inaugural prize was awarded in summer 2023. All articles published during the 2022 calendar year were eligible for nomination.

The Loop publishes short pieces on politics, policy programmes, societal and political issues. We showcase the work of the political science discipline at its best. Our readership extends beyond fellow political scientists, to include policy-makers, journalists, businesspeople and the general public.

Nominations for this prize are made by the Academic Editors of The Loop over the course of a single calendar year. They are then assessed by the Jury for their originality, readability, and significance.

Eligibility

All blog pieces published on the Loop in the calendar year of the award are eligible.

Exclusions

Blog pieces written by serving ECPR Executive Committee members, ECPR Director, or current editors of ECPR publications, are not eligible for this award. In addition, if the prize is awarded to an entry in one of the Loop's series threads, entries in that particular series may not be nominated for the prize the following year.

Prize Jury

The Jury is comprised of three members selected by the journal's Editors; after the inaugural year, we plan to include the previous year’s Best Blog winner in the jury. If the prize-winning piece has more than one author, the first-named author will represent.

The 2023 jury is being confirmed. The Jury for the 2022 prize was as follows:

  • EJ Graff Brandeis University
  • Albrecht Sonntag Université de Nantes
  • Alexandra Segerberg Uppsala University

2022 – Reginald Oduor

Reginald Oduor, 2023 The Loop Best Blog Prize winner

Reginald Oduor is Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Nairobi, where he also obtained his PhD in political philosophy. He gained a BEd in Arts and an MA in Philosophy, both from Kenyatta University. He is the first person with total visual disability to be appointed to a substantive teaching position in a public university in Kenya. His research interests include political philosophy, African philosophy, philosophy of technology, the politics of knowledge production, ethics, disability rights, and philosophy of religion.

In his own words: 'I am overjoyed to receive this prize. Through it, my efforts at encouraging public discourse on home-grown models of democracy in postcolonial polities in Africa and elsewhere have been recognised. The award is also a great encouragement to academics with total visual disability, like myself, for whom access to adequate information is much more daunting than it is for their sighted counterparts.'
