Conference format

The Academic Programme will be organised in the format of Sections and Panels. Each Section will contain a variety of Panels in a given field. There will also be an Open Section, consisting of standalone Panels and Papers which do not necessarily fit within any of the accepted Sections. The programme will be very broad, with Sections covering all the main areas of political science, including comparative politics, public policy and public administration, political theory, international relations and European studies.

Proposals process

There is a two-stage process for submitting proposals:

Call for Sections 16 September – 18 November 2019 (midnight UK time)
Call for full Panels and individual Papers 3 December 2019 – 19 February 2020 (midnight UK time)

All Panel proposals must include 35 Papers. (Papers submitted as part of a Panel do not need to be resubmitted individually.) There will not be a separate call for Papers. Anyone wishing to propose a Paper individually will need to propose it to a specific Section. If approved, the Section Chair will then allocate it to an appropriate Panel. To find out how to submit Section, Panel and Paper proposals, see How to Participate.

Individuals may perform the function of Section Chair, Panel Chair and Discussant only once. Paper Presenters can present no more than two Papers. Each Section should have two Chairs.

Stage 1 Call for Sections

Deadline 18 November 2019 (midnight UK time)

Anyone from an ECPR member institution may organise a Section. Co‑Chairs may come from Full, Associate or non-member institutions. Check your institution's membership status here.

All proposals to organise Sections must be in English, and submitted online using the form on the ECPR website.

Before submitting the proposal, please note:

  • Only the proposed Section Chair should submit a Section proposal
  • The proposed Section Chair and Co-Chair must both have a MyECPR profile (please create an account here if you do not already have one)
  • At least one Section Chair must come from an ECPR member institution
  • A Section consists of 3–8 Panels on a specific topic. Proposals should describe the kind of Panels planned, including themes and potential Chairs. Formal Panel proposals should be submitted by Panel Chairs at the second stage of the application process
  • Standing Groups can only endorse one Section proposal; however, this does not guarantee the Section's approval
  • The submission process will be managed through MyECPR

Academic Convenors use the following criteria to evaluate Sections:

  • Quality of the proposal
  • Experience and competence of Section Chairs
  • Participation potential

All Section proposals must be submitted online by 18 November 2019. The Academic Convenors should accept or decline proposed Sections by 30 November 2019. The preliminary allocation of Panels in each Section is determined by the Academic Convenors. This is subject to confirmation or change in light of the number of Panel/Paper proposals received before the final review in March 2020.

Proposers will be notified by ECPR of the outcome of their Section submission in early December 2019. If you have not received notification by the end of December 2019, contact the Events Team. Queries regarding the academic content of the proposed Section should be addressed to the Academic Convenors via the Events Team before the 18 November 2019 deadline.

Stage 2 Call for Panels (with Papers) and individual Papers

Deadline 19 February 2020 (midnight UK time)

The second stage of the process is open to anyone wishing to propose a complete Panel with Papers, and those wanting to propose individual Papers to a particular Section. Panels provisionally proposed as part of accepted Sections must also be submitted through this procedure. Panels should include 3–5 Papers. Panel proposers do not need to belong to an ECPR member institution, but they must have a MyECPR profile.

Find out more about the process on the How to Participate page. An Open Section welcomes full Panel and individual Paper proposals that do not fit into any of the listed Sections.

The deadline to submit complete Panels (with Papers) and individual Paper proposals is 19 February 2020 (midnight UK time).

From 3 December 2019, Section Chairs can view Panels and Papers being proposed to their Section via their MyECPR account. From 20 February 2020 the Academic Convenors will review the number of Panels/Papers received and will determine the number of Panels per Section. Please note some Section Chairs may be requested by the Academic Convenors to reduce the number of Panels or accept additional Panels to their Section.

From 28 February 2020, Section Chairs may approve/decline/reserve Panel and Paper proposals in their Section. Section Chairs have until 23 March 2020 to finalise their Sections via MyECPR.

Section Chairs are expected to evaluate all Panel and individual Paper proposals in their Section; to allocate individual Paper proposals to Panels and, where appropriate, to form Panels out of individual Paper proposals. It is the Section Chair's responsibility to allocate Chairs and Discussants for Panels in a Section. When evaluating Panels and Papers, Section Chairs should consider the quality of the proposal and the fit with the Section theme.

From 24 March 2020 the Academic Convenors will review approved Panels and Papers to finalise the Academic Programme. The deadline for the Academic Convenors to complete their review is 31 March 2020.

The Academic Convenors may use their discretion to reallocate Panels and Papers to other Sections and Panels as required. Section Chairs may, therefore, be asked to accommodate new Panels in their Sections, and Panel Chairs may be asked to accommodate extra Papers within their Panels. Similarly, Section Chairs may also be asked to reduce the number of their Panels and rearrange their Papers accordingly.

Section Chairs, Panel Chairs, and Paper presenters will be contacted with the Academic Convenors' decision in early April 2020. If your Panel or Paper has been marked as reserved, ECPR will contact you as soon as possible if a space becomes available in the programme. Unfortunately it is not possible to determine when this will be.

Final Academic Programme

The Academic Programme will be available on the ECPR website in early April 2020 and participants will be notified of the outcome of their proposal as soon as possible on/after 1 April 2020. A full timetable will be published by late May 2020.

Amendments to Section/Panel/Paper information must be sent to the Events Team by 1 July 2020 to be included in the printed programme.

Registration

Online registration opens on 1 April 2020. Further details, including registration fees, will be on the ECPR website in due course. Participants attending and appearing in any capacity in the Academic Programme must register and pay before midnight UK time on 20 May 2020. Registration and payment takes place through MyECPR. Anyone who has not registered and paid by this date will be withdrawn from the conference and replaced.

Printed programme

To receive a print copy of the programme when you sign in at the Conference, tick the box in the online registration form.

Updates to the printed programme

If you're unable to attend the conference after your proposal has been approved, or after you have registered, even if at the very last minute, it’s very important to tell us you can’t attend. Panels can collapse without sufficient Papers to create a meaningful discussion, or a Chair/Discussant to lead it. Despite cancellation at short notice, Panel or Section Chairs can sometimes rearrange schedules to avoid disappointment. In the lead-up to and during the General Conference, we maintain a constantly updated webpage to keep all participants aware of changes to the Academic Programme after the date on which the print programme went to press. If you have an update, please email us as soon as possible.

Paper upload

Approved Papers can be uploaded to the ECPR website via the Presenter's MyECPR profile from 1 May 2020. Only the person listed as Presenter can do this. Papers should be in PDF format, in English. To specify preferences and presentation times, contact your Panel Chair directly. Please upload or circulate your Paper to fellow panellists by 10 August 2020 so they have time to prepare comments and questions.

Uploading your Paper via MyECPR constitutes agreement for ECPR to publish the Paper on this website.

Conference timetable

Panels are scheduled in eleven time slots commencing at 13:00 on Wednesday 26 August and concluding at 17:20 on Friday 28 August 2020. Please ensure you are available for ALL eleven time slots.

Council Meeting – Wednesday 26 August

This is scheduled outside the academic programme, from 17:00–18:00. Further information will be sent to Official Representatives or their alternates in due course.

Visas

Visas are the responsibility of the individual. Depending on the purpose of travel and your country of origin, different types of visas will apply. Enquire well in advance about entry regulations by consulting the Austrian embassy or consulate in your home country. Find out more. Visa invitation letters will be supplied on request only when we have received the registration fee in full, and when the 7-day cooling-off period has passed. ECPR cannot offer any further advice on visas.
