Abstract

Similar to its study subject politics, political science as a discipline is struggling to embrace diversity and inclusion. Despite many efforts by political associations, journals, and individuals, the discipline continues to have a masculine identity. Examples of this identity are multifold. They include teaching, where female professors systematically receive lower teaching evaluations than their male colleagues, reading lists, which include more texts by male authors than by female authors, and major disciplinary awards, which, in the majority go to men. This roundtable focuses on the publishing process, with an aim to provide a holistic account of the gendered distribution of authors and reviewers in major European Political Science journals. We know from US journals that there is an underrepresentation of female authors. Do we find similar patterns in European based journals? If this male publication bias exists, do we face the same explanation, namely fewer submissions by female authors? In addition, the roundtable will focus on reviewers. Is there a gender bias in the number of reviews major European journals receive? If so, where does this bias stem from? Do journal editors less frequently solicit female authors? Or are female scholars less likely to accept an invitation to review? This roundtable attempts to answer these questions.
