The democratisation of knowledge is one of the driving forces behind the Open Access movement, an ideal that aligns with steps towards greater methodological transparency and accountability in academic research. However, Open Access and Open Research do not, in and of themselves, guarantee equality of access, opportunity, and treatment for all authors, readers, and reviewers. Even with the best of intentions, established research and publishing systems, processes and practices retain the potential to reinforce and perpetuate hidden biases and barriers. This panel will explore some of the obstacles that stand in the way of equal and inclusive participation, and asks what academic scholars, publishers and practitioners can do together to address these. Andrea Powell, R4L, STM (Speaking Chair) Paul Tuten, Chief Product and Technology Officer, T&F Nadia Brown, Editor of Politics, Groups and Identities Joris van Rossum, STM Taavi Sundell (PRX author)
