International trade and internet governance are two areas where civil society participation has become a norm. Yet there is no consensus on what a successful participation mechanism looks like, and the specific norms and institutions in each field differ widely. This panel will discuss the lessons learned from civil society participation in both trade and internet governance, looking not only on specific mechanisms and their contribution to effectiveness, legitimacy and inclusiveness of governance, adopting a meta-participatory perspective to look at how these mechanisms are assessed and used by their participants and how they can be further streamlined and consolidated.
