Abstract

Research on women in parliaments often proposes a link between the descriptive and substantive representation of women, suggesting that having a higher proportion of women in parliaments leads to a higher representation of women-specific interests. The empirical evidence for this link, however, is inconclusive. This panel is interested in papers contributing to a more thorough understanding of how and when women’s interests are represented in parliaments. In particular, how political careers and the institutional environment affect the behaviour of female MPs and their focus on the representation of women’s interests.
