Abstract

Technological innovation and the rise of new communication tools (social media) have strengthened opportunities for citizens to compose their own ‘media diet’ à la carte, which risks for a lack of diversity and pluralism. Algorithms in media even add to that, making that citizens may end up in filter bubbles or echo chambers, where they are only encounter information already confirming their pre-existing beliefs. Hence, personalization in political communication could present a challenge and risks to strengthen polarization. This panel invites papers on personalized communication and its implications for public debates and the quality of democracy.
