Sustainable development goals and green deals have become buzzwords embraced by political institutions as frameworks of action to transition towards ‘sustainable societies’. Their contents and roles as drivers of change have produced a comprehensive body of research. However, their effects and real transformation potential have been hotly debated. This panel unites papers that take stock of different kinds of sustainability institutions and treaties, of their contents, and their effects. Questions addressed include such as whether sustainability institutions are future-oriented by design, if they can and do change the ‘rules of the game’, and how an all-inclusive transition to ecological futures can be reached.
