In this panel we aim to discuss the traces of identity and distinction boosted by migration flows, constructed and established in different political communities, from Brazil's independence to the present. Within this period we have a singular ideological construction, colonial independence movements, and migratory currents acting as vehicles which enhance ideas of change and identity affirmation. We aspire to argue the role of migrants in the Lusophone world, as diffusers of ideas about Language, Culture and Race, elements of identity, not only on the foundation of a forged common space, but also performing as differentiating features of the various communities. These terms are crucial to the internal debate of a range of Social Sciences and Humanities. They are changeable, holding an historical and ideological load that is revealed in their use as elements of legitimization of political conceptions and practices. Stressing the approach of the History of Ideas and Social Constructivism, the discussion will address the nationalist conceptions elaboration period of the nineteenth century, a new cycle of Portugal-Brazil relations, and the affirmation of the new independent states after the 25th of April 1974, as well as the projections of current and prospective stages; seeking to understand and explain the interactions between the context of production and the produced ideas, the objects and objectives of their application. Communications of an interdisciplinary nature will be welcomed within this panel, as well as studies using different sources. We wish to enable the exploration of the political aspect of lusophony to a large group of researchers and students who are working on similar issues, such as those included in projects as: “A circulação transatlântica dos impressos e a globalização da cultura no século XIX” (CHC-UNL and partner institutions); “Culturas Cruzadas” (CHC-UNL); “Ciclo Lusofonias Políticas” (Ciência Política ao Café).
