Abstract

The panel disseminates results from the InDivEU project on Integrating Diversity in the European Union. The individual papers offer country case studies which explore to what extent differentiated integration is a salient issue in member state politics; and what positions decision-makers take on it. The focus in on smaller member states (Austria, Ireland, Romania, Slovenia), which are not only less studied than larger member states but are also likely to be sceptical about differentiated integration. On the one hand, small states are thought to be more dependent on international cooperation than larger states. On the other hand, differentiated integration threatens the leverage (veto power) of small member states in the EU. The papers have also appeared in a Special Issue of the Australian and New Zealand Journal of European Studies (2021, 13/3).
