Differentiated integration (DI) is a concept that has allowed students of European integration to gain a better understanding of the emergence and evolution of the supranational architecture across time, space and different policy fields. This panel will question the extent to which DI is a useful lens to study sectoral governance at work. We invite theoretical and empirical contributions focusing on the governance of differentiation in one or several policy areas. In particular, we invite papers that consider alternatives to differentiation, such as covert integration or integration by stealth and segmented orders. Empirically, we welcome studies considering policy areas where we see distinct dynamics around DI, including: areas where integration is more challenging or potentially unattainable, and where DI offers a way forward (e.g. social and welfare policies); policy areas where DI is well established and spills over to other sectors, while causing tension with the goal of uniform integration (e.g. European Monetary Union and European Banking Union).
