Abstract

In view of severe societal threats, such as health risks, hazards posed by environmental issues, serious cross-border security, financial crises, the government of risk has become the core concern at national, supranational, and international levels. This panel includes theoretical and empirical contributions focusing on risk regulation at various levels of government across diverse risk-processing domains (e.g., environmental issues, pharmaceuticals, food safety, financial regulation, new technologies). In particular, the panel focuses on (1) explaining diverse regulatory responses in times of uncertainty, societal contestation, and evolving risk perceptions and (2) examining the role of non-majoritarian institutions and challenges they face to provide credible solutions to (emerging) risks.
