Abstract

Awareness of unsustainable practices and structures in current food systems has significantly increased during the last two decades. Modern farming practices are associated with numerous environmental problems such as water pollution, biodiversity loss, greenhouse gas emissions, and ethical concerns about animal welfare. Governments are increasingly realizing that food systems must transition toward more sustainable production practices while addressing societal demands for environment, animal welfare and climate goals, which is reflected in recent policy developments and attempts at reform worldwide. Key points of interest include which policy instruments may contribute to sustainable transformation of agriculture and food systems, as well as how synergies between related issue areas can be harnessed for successful policy integration and implementation. Integration of climate goals and agricultural policy is a central theme of this panel, explored both empirically and theoretically by the presenters. The papers in this panel consider pathways to more sustainable food systems through systematic analysis of agricultural policymaking processes and outcomes in both EU and international contexts.
