Abstract

Trust has become a critical element for governance and for the well-functioning of regimes. At the same time, distrust has increasingly attracted academic attention, as a stand-alone concept that goes well beyond the contrary of trust. Trust and distrust are therefore two separate although intertwined elements that, applied to political phenomenon, contribute to the rise of innovative research questions that need to be empirically explored. The goal of the present panel is to gather the community adopting a ‘trust perspective’ to gain additional knowledge on the respective role of trust and distrust in public and private governance. It can include contributions exploring the role of trust and distrust as dependent or independent variables and which address a variety of political and social phenomenon, such as (but not limited to) agencification, capture, standard-setting, certification and labelling, the evolution of regimes, and the role of intermediaries therein. This panel represents a unique opportunity to bring together different applications and approaches from political science and nearby disciplines which share the same focus on trust in governance. It is also the opportunity to discuss about the latest developments from a theoretical and empirical perspective. Theoretical contributions and early-stage papers are also very welcome.
