This panel seeks to discuss research about the current challenges that regulatory agencies are facing worldwide. In the last decade the environment in which regulatory agencies operate has changed drastically. Besides concerns about independence, transparency, and accountability new challenges have emerged such as: (i) mandatory decision-making processes (i.e regulatory impact analysis); (ii) automated decision-making systems and artificial intelligence, which brings unforeseen regulatory challenges; (iii) climate and environmental regulatory demands; and (iv) political shifts such as the rise of populists and authoritarian regimes. These changes challenge the orthodox model of regulatory agencies, which might be unequipped or even unwanted to face these changes. Therefore, this panel welcomes research that deals with country cases or comparative research that address one or several challenges that regulatory agencies are facing, and problematize the classical model of those agencies.
