Abstract

Scholars commonly consider democratic innovations as the embodiment of concepts closely associated with democracy, such as representation, deliberation, equality, or legitimacy. Yet, existing studies often rely on a model-based approach that attaches each model of democratic innovation to one specific democratic model (e.g., deliberative democracy and minipublics). This panel aims to broaden the discussion about the way we theorize democratic innovations, the principles they intended to realize, and the theoretical frameworks we use to analyze their contributions. We welcome papers that explore different political concepts within democratic innovations and that empirically and/or theoretically examine the current theoretical frameworks used to conceive and evaluate democratic innovations.
