Abstract

Speaker: Claire Dupont The European Green Deal was published in 2019 and formed a central pillar of the European Commission’s political agenda for its terms to 2024. While the adoption of the overarching goals of the EGD and its key early legislation (such as the European Climate Law) seemed to advance relatively smoothly in the context of wider crises, later policy measures – and especially those falling outside the climate domain – have faced far more backlash and political negotiating. What are the political dynamics behind these differing policy outcomes under the EGD over the course of 2019 to 2024? This is the main question addressed in this presentation, with reference to both internal political dynamics inside the EU and external events or crises affecting the EU system.
