The politics of digital regulation in the EU

Abstract

The growing influence of social media platforms throughout the last decade has raised questions about their role in the public spheres, and how public authorities should deal with them. The EU has been at the forefront of attempts to regulate Big Tech platforms through initiatives such as the Digital Single Market Directive, the Digital Services Act (DSA), the Digital Markets Act (DMA) or the ongoing AI Act. However, while there is a consensus that tech regulation is necessary by all actors, there is a struggle to define the type of regulation that is necessary. The panel addresses the politics of digital regulation in the EU context with a particular emphasis on the role that actors play, and their impact in the social and political dynamics of the tech regulation field.
