Abstract

This panel explores the complex dynamics of anti-gender movements in the post-Yugoslav region, providing a thorough analysis of the social and political context of these movements' emergence and development. By examining the historical trends, cultural differences, and various theological frameworks of anti-gender mobilization, the panel illuminates the variety of forms that have emerged in the post-Yugoslav arena. It provides a thorough comparative study of seven postsocialist nations that had a similar history but fell apart due to wars in the nineties and divergent approaches to "Europeanization." Building and reestablishing connections across new borders has never stopped gender researchers and activists from fighting for human rights, freedom of speech, and opposing local nationalisms. But now, it is precisely the forces of ultraconservatism that use the same language of rights but have quite different illiberal agendas. The post-Yugoslav ultraconservatives, who are the most formidable opponents in every other aspect, appear to concur that the primary danger stems from the concept of "gender." This panel tells a story about gender as a post-Yugoslav “symbolic glue” (Kováts & Pōim, 2015).
