Abstract

The past legislature and European Commission mandate has often been described as one ushering a revival of the social policy agenda. The European Pillar of Social Rights has provided a key framework for asserting principles and give direction towards the rebalancing of EU socio-economic governance. While much attention has been paid to legislative initiatives such as the Directive on faire minimum wages or the Directive on platform work, achieving the objectives of the Pillar depend to a large extent on steering national policy. This panel examines precisely at a range of employment policies, where the EU only has supporting competences, namely labour law, unemployment benefits, skills, the fight against poverty, or long-term care. The papers included provide up to date empirical insights and an assessment of the EU’s tools and their effectiveness with regard to standing challenges.
