Abstract

Deliberative democracy has gained momentum in the last decade across the world at local, national or transnational levels. Much attention has been paid to the demand for deliberation, how deliberation is organised, what are its basic principles and functioning mechanisms, or how to assess its quality. In this context, there is limited analysis about the meaning of deliberation in a historical perspective or about the views of those who are key to its functioning such as the organizers or politicians. This panel gathers papers that address these gaps in the literature and can make theoretical or empirical contributions to the broader field of study. The papers investigate the conceptual evolution of deliberation, the views of organisers, the attitudes of politicians, and the potential effects of deliberation in post-conflict societies.
