Abstract

Transnational repression (TR) constitutes the state reaching across borders to coerce its citizens residing abroad. Methods range from digital harassment to physical intimidation to, in extreme circumstances, assassination. Research on TR has mapped the prevalence of the practice, states the frequently engage in it, some of its domestic drivers, and certain host state responses. However, the literature is in its relatively early stages and issues of conceptualization, theory, and data sources are still developing. These papers bring together diverse perspectives on TR that interrogate its motives, effects, and actors. The panel will be of interest to scholars of migration, globalization, authoritarian politics, diaspora politics and transnational activism.
