Abstract

Conspiracy theories have long been a central defining feature of the radical right. The salience of conspiracy theories continue to galvanize radical right movements, political parties, groups, and individual adherents. The development of digital technology along with the fragmentation of mainstream media create a context where conspiracy theories can circulate with greater speed and to broader audiences than at any other time in human history. The spread of disinformation and misinformation are part of a growing infrastructure aided by national political figures who openly promote "alternative facts." The increasingly global nature of various social problems (e.g., health, environment, migration etc.) has also provided an important context where conspiracy theories can flourish. This panel addresses various issues related to the characteristics of conspiracy theories and their growing salience in contemporary society. Each paper addresses different facets of how conspiracy theories inform the radical right and, in turn, are part of the radical right’s growing influence across the globe.
