Abstract

As a central player in EU policy-making, an understanding of the role of the European Commission is indispensable for understanding the way EU policies are formed and executed. At the same time, the Commission is heavily constrained by the wider political context within which it operates. The papers in this panel explore this tension by analysing the role and mode of operation of the Commission around a number of important initiatives that have arisen in recent years.
