Abstract

State of the world today appears to be one of a permanent crisis. Natural disasters, conflict and war imbued everyday lives whether directly or indirectly through media coverage and policy responses. Since the adoption of the women, peace, and security policy framework a burgeoning literature delves into these issues. Although methodologically diverse and grounded in case studies from various continents, papers in this panel all unpack the connection between these crises and women. Do civil wars enhance women’s political empowerment? Do extreme weather events create a stronger demand for women’s leadership? And if women are active participants in conflicts, conflict resolutions or conflict elimination: what are their strategies, their success and how are they personally affected?
