Increasing women’s representation in politics is a main concern for feminist movements and scholarship as well. Despite important improvements in some contexts, equal representation remains a largely unachieved goal. The panel brings together papers which, based on empirical evidence from different national and regional contexts, tackle the issue of political representation from a gender perspective. Papers cover different political and institutional dimensions such as procedures of candidate selection, the introduction and implementation of quotas and political culture to explore possible factors which impact political representation and to assess the success (or failure) of existing policy measures.
