Abstract

This panel seeks to explore the multifaceted field of amalgamation in the context of European local government reforms. Focusing on a nuanced analysis of outcomes and their broader implications, the panel seeks to bridge existing gaps and contradictions in the academic literature. As the merging of local authorities is a cornerstone in the transformation of many European local government, its multiple effects need to be carefully analysed. The aim is not only to understand the immediate consequences, but also to distil valuable insights from a long-term perspective. The lack of consensus in the academic discourse makes it necessary to consolidate the different points of view and empirical findings. In this way, the panel aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the public policy implications associated with amalgamation. It is intended to offer a forward-looking perspective and provide recommendations for the design and evaluation of future municipal boundary reforms. In a rapidly evolving socio-political landscape, the findings of this panel discussion can make a significant contribution to the development of informed, evidence-based policy that can address the complexities of local government reorganisation in Europe. Ultimately, the panel aims to be a catalyst for promoting effective governance practises and ensuring the sustainable development of local government structures in the region.
