Crisis of Liberal Democracy

Abstract

This panel looks at democratic responses to contemporary crises, articulating a new path in debates between agonism and deliberative democracy. Rising political polarisation demands that we develop a better understanding of populism and fascism as a response to crisis. Yet the concept of crisis cannot be reduced to danger, but also functions as a call to action and political participation. New approaches to deliberation – from inventive storytelling to problem-focused approaches – provide an alternative to political polarisation without papering over radical disagreement.
