Abstract

There is concern in public discourse and academic literature regarding the health of democracies and particularly the role of young people in democratic societies with differences being observed in comparison to other age groups and previous generations of young people. This virtual panel contributes to this discourse by exploring young people’s democratic citizenship norms and practices in the context of place, intersectional identities, and changing democracies. The panel is also interested in the barriers young people experience when engaging as citizens, and in the role of citizenship education to support young people to be active citizens. Thus, in this panel, we ask: How do young people perceive citizenship? How do young people engage as citizens and which barriers do they experience when participating? How is the current provision of citizenship education suited for our changing democratic systems? To address these questions we present findings from interviews and surveys with young people and civic society organizations and analysis of curricular documents and education policies.
